December Meeting – Beachwood BBQ & Brewing in Long Beach

Please note that the December meeting has been moved to Sunday the 4th, in order to avoid conflicts with the ColLAboration event at Golden Road Brewery on the 3rd, and the Strong Ale Festival at Pizza Port Carlsbad on the 2nd and 3rd. So why not go to one or both of those, and devote the whole weekend to great beer? This meeting will be hosted by Owner Gabe Gordon and Brewmaster Julian Shrago of Beachwood BBQ & Brewing in Long Beach! Julian will be giving a tour of the brewery, as well as answering our questions about his beers and his recent move from home brewer to Pro. Read a little bit more about them in this LA Weekly article from June. You can easily get here via the Metro Blue Line, as the 5th St. Station is just 2 blocks from the brewery. Consider taking the Metro, and leaving your car at home.

The style of the month is Belgian Strong Ales, but feel free to bring any type of homebrew to share and discuss with your fellow brewers.

Congrats go to Jeff Koehler for winning a 2nd place for his Export Stout in the California Homebrew Competition! This is the beer he brewed at the club brew in July behind the Eagle Rock Homebrew Shop. Full results can be seen here. Congrats also to our sister club Pacific Gravity for winning the Anchor CA Homebrew Club of the Year!

Club Elections

We’ve got at least one person interested in each club board position, so elections will held this meeting. It’s not too late to toss your hat in the ring, if you want to get involved. All members in good standing (have paid your $20 annual membership) will be able to vote. If you can’t make it to the meeting, we’ll send you a ballot via email

November 5th is the American Homebrewer’s Association “Learn To Homebrew Day.” You’ll have a chance to learn about all-grain brewing if you are thinking about making the jump from extract. Steve Raub from Eagle Rock Brewery will be brewing his Full Moon Bock as a pilot batch. It begins at 9AM, and the cost is $10. You get a simple lunch and a pint of ERB beer as well. Find more info and sign up here. If you don’t want to attend the entire brew day, we’ll be starting the normal meeting at 2PM. Our fellow Yeastside Brewer and ERB Taproom manager Lee Bakofsky will be giving a tour of the brewery around 2:30. We can share homebrews until the taproom opens for the public at 4PM.

We will be picking the club entry for the Club Only Competition in German Wheat beers. This covers categories 15A, B, C, and D. If you have one of these, bring 3 (12oz.) bottles and we’ll have a judging panel pick the brew to represent our club.

If you would like to visit Island Brewing, Surf Brewing, and Ladyface to the North of LA, consider joining Pacific Gravity on their November 12th road trip. Cost is $30, and the bus leaves at 9:30AM from the Culver City Homebrew Shop.
