Being British, the owners of The Lost Knight have taken the best elements of the British Pub and created an authentic Public House right in our neighborhood. They have 13 beers on tap (including a cask or two on beer engine), darts, and authentic pub grub with a few modern twists. We’ll be meeting upstairs in the otheroom, which has its own set of otherbeers on tap and a great outdoor patio which we’ll have access to. Belgian Abbey Ales are the style of the month, so bring your examples and any other homebrew you’d like to share and get feedback on, but please limit to 1 or 2 bottles so that we can support this new meeting host. Parking can be tricky in Echo Park; your best bet may be to look for nearby residential parking. The lot south of Sunset is only 2hrs. max. There’s another lot right across the street from Lost Knight – we’re investigating if that’s an option for us. More info to follow.
Hey ladies! Yeastside members Christina & Claire have graciously offered up their home for us to brew the first ever “Ladies of Yeastside Holiday Brew”. The holiday beer recipe, ingredients, and all equipment needed for this epic brew day will also be provided by our hostesses. Signups are ongoing, so email Gayle, let her know you plan to attend, and what potluck dish you’ll be bringing to share. Sorry – no guys allowed! However, our Holiday Beer will be poured at the Yeastside Holiday Party for ALL to enjoy!
As we mentioned in last month’s newsletter, we’re planning a Holiday Party to end this year with a bang! Thanks to members who signed up at the August meeting to volunteer their time, culinary creations, and / or beer, but as we said, we’re going to need everyone to pitch in to make it great. Please email Gayle soon and let her know how you’ll help. Thank you – the party will be as awesome as we make it!
– The Pacific Brewers Cup entry window is August 28th through September 12th, judging on September 26th.
– The California State Homebrew Competition’s entry deadline is October 17th, judging is November 8th.
– The SoCal Regional Homebrew Competition’s entry window is August 10th through October 11th and will be judged on October 24th at Hangar 24’s warehouse in Redlands.
Now that we’ve entered the second half of 2015, we‘ve begun thinking about who among you will step up, accept the challenge, and help the Yeastside Brewers to continue growing and improving. Being a board member isn’t a great burden, and becoming more involved in the decisions and actions that shape our club can be very rewarding. As our membership increases, so do the opportunities to get into it and get involved. Please don‘t hesitate to ask a current board member for more information.
The BJCP is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Byron Burch of Santa Rosa, CA. He was a BJCP Master Judge. In the late 1980s and early ’90s he was on what would now be the BJCP Board of Directors. He helped shape policy throughout that time and was great to work with.
Byron received the AHA Governing Committee Award in 1990 for significant contributions to the community of homebrewers. In the AHA National Competition, he was Homebrewer of the Year in 1986, and three time Meadmaker of the Year in 1992, 1994, and 2001.
*On a personal note, it was his book, “Brewing Quality Beers“, that came with my first starter kit way back in 1998. In that little paperback, he conveyed exactly what I needed to learn in order to get on the right path in homebrewing. I felt privileged to meet him and thank him for his guidance at the So Cal Homebrew Fest once upon a long time ago. The world has lost a wise teacher and a great homebrewer and meadmaker. — vm
– October’s meeting will be at Hermosillo / Highland Park Brewery. Style of the month is Pumpkin, Vegetable, or Spiced Beer.
– November’s meeting will be at Craft Beer Cellars in Eagle Rock. Style of the month is Any Strong Ale.
– December’s meeting…is the Holiday Party! Style of the month is….what else? Holiday Ales!
We’re mentioning these future meetings and the monthly styles in the hope that some of you will brew to those styles for the meetings. Ideally, it would be great if we had at least a few different examples of the monthly style to compare and contrast. Go ahead, throw your hat in the ring!
