December Meeting – Beachwood BBQ & Brewing in Long Beach

Please note that the December meeting has been moved to Sunday the 4th, in order to avoid conflicts with the ColLAboration event at Golden Road Brewery on the 3rd, and the Strong Ale Festival at Pizza Port Carlsbad on the 2nd and 3rd. So why not go to one or both of those, and devote the whole weekend to great beer? This meeting will be hosted by Owner Gabe Gordon and Brewmaster Julian Shrago of Beachwood BBQ & Brewing in Long Beach! Julian will be giving a tour of the brewery, as well as answering our questions about his beers and his recent move from home brewer to Pro. Read a little bit more about them in this LA Weekly article from June. You can easily get here via the Metro Blue Line, as the 5th St. Station is just 2 blocks from the brewery. Consider taking the Metro, and leaving your car at home.

The style of the month is Belgian Strong Ales, but feel free to bring any type of homebrew to share and discuss with your fellow brewers.

Congrats go to Jeff Koehler for winning a 2nd place for his Export Stout in the California Homebrew Competition! We’ll do a pot luck to round out the menu, so please bring a side dish and serving utensil if you can. Please reply to RSVP for the event if you know you are coming, if you plan to brew, and what side dish you can bring so we can plan for the crowd size. Good items to bring include: sunscreen, a chair, and of course, beer!

July (Already?) Meeting

Club-brew at the new Eagle Rock Homebrew shop, starting bright and early Sunday July 10 at 9:00 am.

Several folks will be lugging down their gear and brewing; presenting a great opportunity for less experienced brewers to gain insight on more advanced techniques.

Rumor has it there may be some kind of BBQ or grilling happening as well.

For the non early-risers, feel free to roll out later, the shop is hosting a brewing class at 5:00 pm.

See you there!

June Meeting-IPA Month at Tony’s Darts Away

When: Sunday June 5th, Noon (when they open, so don’t bother arriving early)

Where: Tony’s Darts Away

1710 West Magnolia Blvd.

Burbank, CA 91506

The style of the month is IPA, and we could think of no better place to visit than Tony’s Darts Away. IPA’s take up half the taplist at all times. Everyday is like an IPA festival! If you have any homebrews to share in this style, please bring them. Of course, any style of homebrew is encouraged. Please do not bring commercial beers to this meeting, as TDA will have that covered for us. They are happy to pour you taster flights, so you can take quite a tour of the hop bombs!

Since TDA is a “no bottles bar” we need to take all empty bottles out with us when we leave. Growlers are encouraged.

Around 1PM we’ll have meeting notes about upcoming events, including the AHA National Homebrewers Conference June 16-18 and the club brew which brings me to…

Club brew at Eagle Rock Homebrew Supply on Sunday July 10th!

(2nd Sunday to avoid 4th of July conflicts) – Eagle Rock Homebrew Supply will be hosting The Yeastside Brewers club brew in the back parking lot. Members will be invited to bring their brewing setups so everyone can see what equipment and techniques others use. This should be a really good time, and a great chance for brewers of all levels to get new ideas for their own brewing. If you are thinking of making the jump from extract to all-grain brewing, you can learn a lot.

The shop is fully open now too, just in case you weren’t aware. Supplies are pouring in, possibly as you read this.

May Meeting-Home Cheese Making Demo (moved to Sunday the 8th)

When: Sunday May 8th, Noon
Where: Club member Skipp Shelly’s house in Echo Park
1112 West Edgeware Road
Los Angeles, CA 90026

Join us at Skipp’s house as he gives us a demo of home cheese making! He will be sharing some cheese from previous batches, and teaching us about the process. The meeting is being moved from Saturday to Sunday, since May 7th is the judging for Mayfaire (see below for more info). Yes, we know it is Mother’s Day, and sorry if that doesn’t work for some people. But your Mom probably loves cheese, right? Why not make her some as a belated Mother’s Day gift, or just for being wonderful.

Our style of the month is Specialty, Experimental, Historical beers (category 23). These are the “weird beers” so bring out the freaks! If you have any homebrews to share in these styles, please bring them. Of course, any style of homebrew is encouraged. If you have a favorite commercial Specialty/Experimental/Historical, bring it along too.

Around 1PM (or whenever Skipp has a break in the cheese action) we’ll have meeting notes about upcoming events.

Competition Info:
The first local judging/stewarding opportunity is rapidly approaching. The Maltose Falcons’ Mayfaire competition is on May 7th at Saint Martin’s Church in Canoga Park. This is a great opportunity to get some competition experience and more help is always needed. Full information and how to register as a judge or steward can be found on the Maltose Falcons’ website. We would like to make a strong club showing with as many members that can make the trip!

As for entering beers for competitions, the next individual competitions are the Los Angeles County Fair and Southern California Regional Homebrew Competition, both of which have entry due dates in July. The next club only competition is in August for meads so we will hold a taste-off during the August meeting. More details will be posted as the dates get closer.

Future meeting plans:
June 5th (Sunday) – Tony’s Darts Away. Monthly style is IPA (category 14). If you haven’t been to TDA, and you love IPA’s, then it’s about time! Half of the taplist are California brewed IPAs.
July 9th (2nd Saturday to avoid 4th of July conflicts) – location TBD. Working on plans for a club brew, where members will be invited to bring their brewing setup and get everyone brewing together.
