September Meeting – Sour and Belgian Strong styles at Little Bear

Join us this Saturday at the Little Bear “Belgian Beer Cafe” downtown. This spot serves a wide variety of Belgian beer, and domestically brewed Belgian-style beer on tap and in bottles. This is complimented by a Belgian food menu that is sure to please. They serve Brunch until 3PM, and also will offer their lunch options throughout the time of our meeting.
The styles of the month are Category 17 Sours and Category 18 Belgian Strong, but feel free to bring any type of homebrew. Consider bringing a copy of your recipe, as that only helps when discussing your beer and getting feedback. Please do not bring commercial beers along to this meeting, only homebrew. Buy your commercial beers at the bar and support Little Bear for hosting us!
Light Hybrids are the category for the Club Only Competition. If you have a good example of one (Cream Ale, Blonde Ale, Kölsch, or American Wheat or Rye Beer) please bring three 12-oz bottles to the meeting along with the recipe and bottle labels already filled out. The highest-scoring beer after a blind judging will be sent to represent the club. The judging may not take place the day of the meeting. August Meeting – Mead Day and Porter COC

When: Saturday August 4th, 4PM – 8PM
Where: 1427 Quintero St., Los Angeles 90026

This Saturday we will meet at Club President Josh Jensen’s house in Echo Park to celebrate AHA Mead Day! Club member Jeremy Stacy will be giving a mead making demo for those interested in learning how easy it can be. Josh will also be making a mead (Sparkling Ginger Mead) but don’t expect to gain too much knowledge, because it will be his first first batch. You are more than welcome to bring honey and equipment to make a mead yourself. Snacks are always welcome!
The styles of the month are Category 24-26 Mead and Category 12 Porter, but feel free to bring any type of homebrew or commercial beers. Consider bringing a copy of your recipe, as that only helps when discussing your beer and getting feedback. Porters are the category for the Club Only Competition. If you have a good example of one, please bring three 12-oz bottles to the meeting along with the recipe and bottle labels already filled out. July meeting – BBQ and Yeast Starter Demo

When: Saturday July 14th, 5PM – 9PM
Where:4981 Eagle Rock Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90041

This Saturday we’ll be meeting in the Eagle Rock Homebrew Supply parking lot behind the shop.  Since we nearly suffered from heat stroke here last July, we have pushed the time of the meeting to later in the day.  Vice President Jerl Leutz will be firing up the BBQ Grill, so bring any meat or veggies you would like to grill for dinner.  Side dishes and desserts are encouraged as well.  Feel free to bring commercial examples, in addition to any homebrews.  It isn’t a bad idea to bring a folding chair if you don’t want to stand for 4 hours.  In order to reduce trash, we ask that members bring their own tasting glass.
At 5:30 we’ll be doing a yeast starter demo that will take about an hour.  Making a starter is a great way to get your beer fermenting faster and to attenuate more fully.  If you aren’t doing this already, see how easy it can be to improve your brews by giving the yeast a jump start.
The style of the month is Category 16 Belgian and French Ales, but feel free to bring any type of homebrew. A big congrats to our Competition Cooridinator Jeff Koehler who won gold in the AHA Nationals with his Munich Dunkel! Looks like that triple decoction mash paid off big time!

Upcoming Events

-July 15th from 5 to 8pm is the “Craft of Homebrewing” event at the Craft and Folk Art Museum by the La Brea Tar Pits. There will be a presentation on the history and craft of homebrewing, followed by tastings.  Brewers that bring their beer to share get free admission and a free “high end” hot dog. -July 20th is the deadline to drop off entries for the LA County Fair. Enter a bunch of your beers to get some objective feedback and hopefully win ribbons.
-July 21st is the Summer Party for Pacific Gravity. They have offered a deal to Yeastside members, who can get into the party for $10 a head. This is their big annual bash with tons of food and homebrew.
-August 4th is the next meeting, which is AHA Mead Day! We will meet at Club President Josh Jensen’s house in Echo Park for a Mead making demo. The COC style is Porter, so bring 3 bottles to compete if you have them.
-Competitions to brew for now include the Light Hybrid COC and Pacific Brewer’s Cup in September.

May Meeting – Eagle Rock Brewery

When: Saturday May 12th, 2PM – 6PM

Where: 3056 Roswell Street  Los Angeles, CA 90065
This Saturday is our monthly meeting at Eagle Rock Brewery.  Club co-founder and ERB employee Lee Bakofsky will be hosting us.  Around 2:30 we’ll get a tour of the brewery, and then meeting announcements at 3PM.  If you would like to contribute to the cause, snacks are always welcome!  At about 6PM, the Grilled Cheese food truck will arrive if you want to buy some grub.  In order to reduce trash, we suggest members bring their own tasting glass.  Some members of our fellow homebrew club Pacific Gravity plan to come share a beer with us around 4PM and afterwards.  We’ll be putting the pressure on all of you to attend the Brew For The Cure event in Van Nuys the next day!  See the link below for more details. Upcoming Events

Lots of great events are just over the horizon!
-April 9th thru 14th is the Deschutes Brewery Base Camp Week.  There are events all over LA, including a “Hats Off to Homebrewers” at Steingarten, where you can a get clone recipe book and free whole hops!
-April 12th is the deadline to drop off entries for the Mayfaire homebrew competition run by The Maltose Falcons.
-April 21st is the Pasadena Pub Crawl from 4PM to Last Call.  More info here.
-May 5th is the Southern California Homebrew Festival at Lake Castias near Ojai!  This is a weekend long event with over 30 homebrew clubs sampling beers.  Yeastsiders can camp with Pacific Gravity, who have more info on the event.
-May 12th is our monthly meeting at Eagle Rock Brewery.  The style of the month is American Ales.

Brew for the Cure!

Hello Home Brewers!
The Brew for the Cure Homebrew Festival is happening May 13th. This is a call for entries. We need the great homebrewers of Southern California to jump into the fight against cancer and help us throw a kick ass party! It’s a chance to hang out with friends compete for prizes and get your beer out there to see what people think.  There will be music and food, and the home brew will be flowing. Prizes will be awarded to the winning beers chosen by the public.
Entrants as well as attendants will not be charged, but there is a suggested donation of 20 dollars that will go directly to The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society to help fund cancer research. All proceeds from the festival will be donated to charity. It’s a great excuse to drink beer for a good cause.
If you want to be a featured brewer at the festival all you need to do is download the entry form attached and mail it back to

with your check made payable to The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. You need not send beer with the form just bring your entry on the day of the event. We recommend bringing a minimum of 2 gallons of beer to the festival by any delivery method, be it bottles, kegs or growlers. Brewers may enter more than one beer. Please fill out a separate form for each entry.
The deadline for entries is May 1st.

Bus Trip to Stone AHA Rally March 10th

Last month we reported that the 40 homebrewer spots were full for the Stone March Madness AHA Rally. But that was before we learned that club member Ward G. Walkup IV has an entry, and Josh Jensen got accepted from the waiting list! So 2 club members will be vying for the honor of being the next homebrewer to collaborate with Stone for a beer that will be released nationally, and enter the GABF Pro-Am this fall. 40 homebrews will be available for tasting and the top 4 beers in a people’s choice vote will go to a best of show round. Stone crew picks one of those 4 as the winner. We need your support to make sure both Ward’s Wheatwine and Josh’s Rye Double IPA make it to the final four!
We’ll be organizing a bus trip to this event, leaving Union Station at 10AM on Saturday the 10th, and returning around 7 or 8PM. The event at Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens is from 1-4PM, and you must RSVP in advance and be a AHA Member to attend. The event is free to get into for AHA members, or you can renew or join at the door. But RSVP on their site NOW if you want to go, as they will cap the attendance. The bus trip will cost you $25/person. You can pay at the March meeting, or reply to this email to have a PayPal invoice sent to you. Please pay ASAP, so we have a head count for the bus. After the event we will stop by a brewpub in the area for a early dinner and more beers before heading back to LA.

March Meeting – Mohawk Bend in Echo Park

When: Saturday March 3rd, 2PM – 5PM
Where: 2141 W. Sunset Blvd, Los Angeles

This month’s meeting has been moved from Haven Gastropub to Mohawk Bend. Haven’s brewpub is not up and running yet, so we’ll plan to go there in June when we can try their house brews. Tony Yanow and his staff are excited to have our club visit their restaurant and bar. If you have never been there, you are in for a treat. They have around 70 taps of mostly California Microbrews. There is great food, with lots of vegan and carnivore options, plus amazing pizza. Show up hungry and enjoy lunch with your beers. Since they sell beer here, only bring homebrews to share with your fellow club members, not commercial examples. At 5PM they will need to get ready for existing dinner reservations, so we can move to the bar area around that time.

The style of the month is Stout, but feel free to bring any type of homebrew. Consider bringing a copy of your recipe, as that only helps when discussing your beer and getting feedback.

The next Club Only Competition is upon us!  For those members who have a good example of a stout, please bring three 12-oz bottles to the March meeting along with the recipe and bottle labels already filled out.  All classes of stout in the BJCP Category 13 are welcome.  The best stout will be sent to represent the club and those who were not selected can take their remaining bottles home or share with the club.
The April meeting will also have another Club Only Competition showdown – this time for Scottish and Irish Ales.  Once again, if you have a beer in the Scottish/Irish styles of BJCP Category 9, please bring three 12-oz bottles and completed paperwork to the April meeting.
Finally, the American Homebrewers Association’s National Homebrew Competition is soon upon us.  Starting February 28, you can start entering your beer in the competition.  This is the largest homebrew competition in the world and spots fill up quickly, so don’t wait too long to enter your beers!  One 12-oz bottle is required for the first round and if your beer places, you will need to send 3 more to the Nationals.  Jeff will speak more about this competition at the meeting.

February Meeting – all-grain brew at Scott Piotrowski’s house in Glassell Park

When: Saturday February 4th, 11AM – 5PM
Where: 2456 Sundown Drive, Glassell Park, 90065

This Saturday we’ll be meeting at Scott’s house while he brews up a batch of Amber Ale in his garage. If you would like to learn about all-grain to make the jump from extract, this is a great chance to do so. Parking may be tricky, so check the link at the beginning of this paragraph for a helpful map that Scott made explaining how to get there, and where to park. If you can’t make it for the whole brew day, we’ll be having meeting announcements around 2pm. Scott is looking to improve his brewing system, so would like ideas and input.
We recommend bringing a folding chair, and a tasting glass to prevent plastic waste. Also bring lots of beer/homebrew! Scott has a fridge in the garage to keep your beers well chilled.
The style of the month is English Pale Ales, but feel free to bring any type of homebrew to share and discuss with your fellow brewers. Consider bringing a copy of your recipe for any homebrews, as that only helps when discussing your beer and getting feedback.

January Meeting – Eagle Rock Homebrew Supply – 1st Anniversary meeting

This meeting is the first anniversary of our first official club meeting! We had many folks attend that brew day in the Bakofsky garage, and we got a great start to our club. This month we’ll be returning to the Eagle Rock Homebrew Supply shop, where we had our April and July club brew meeting. If you don’t like to stand for 4 hours, you should bring your own chair. Also bring lots of beer/homebrew!
The style of the month is Holiday Ales, but feel free to bring any type of homebrew to share and discuss with your fellow brewers. It would be a great idea to bring a copy of your recipe for any homebrews, as that only helps when discussing your beer.

The Doug King Memorial is coming up soon, hosted by the Maltose Falcons. Entry due date is Jan. 12th, and the cost is $6 per entry. The Best Of Show beer will be brewed by Eagle Rock Brewery as the 2012 GABF Pro-Am entry! More info available here, check it out as not all categories will be judged. The focus is on Lagers, Experimental/Specialty, Imperial anything, and Session beers.
