Competition End of Year 2016

2016 was a great year for the Yeastside Brewers. Six of our members spent months preparing for the BJCP exam, and in 2017 I expect that we will have six new judges.

We also had an amazing showing at all of the competitions funneling into the Brewer of the Year competition. At the last competition of the year, the Southern California Regional Homebrew Competition, we captured a Best of Show in mead and 14 additional medals. Here is a rundown of our winnings:

SoCal Regional Home-brew Competition

There were 314 entries judged and 139 registered participants, judges, and stewards.

It was a very tough battle for Brewer of the Year, but we have a new champion. After winning the honor the first two years, Ward Walkup IV ceded the battle to Jeff Koehler. However, that was 2016 and we need to look forward to 2017 where everything starts over – anyone can win! The first competition of 2017 is the Maltose Falcons’ Doug King Memorial Competition. This encompasses lagers, session beers, imperial beers and weird beers. Beers are due January 13. The competition is January 21 at MacLeods Ale Brewing in Van Nuys and everyone should consider helping to judge!

We will be doing a style tasting of Winter Warmers at our December meeting. For those of you that agreed to have that style ready, try and have them at the meeting early as we try to do this portion about 30 minutes after the start of the meeting. January will showcase any lager since, hopefully, these are what are being entered in the Doug King Competition! Remember, this portion of the meeting is for learning both on the tasting side as well as on the brewing side so it is a good excuse to stretch your brewing wings!

A new opportunity for spreading your brewing wings in 2017 has been offered from our friends at Eagle Rock Brewery. We have acquired 44 pounds of Jarrylo pellet hops from ERB at $10 per pound. We will have a Yeastside-only competition where Jarrylo is the main component in the finished beer. The winning beer will be brewed by ERB in the new year. More details are forthcoming!

Thank you for all of the hard work this year and let’s do it again in 2017!

REMINDER: LA County Fair Entries due July 24th

Entries for the Los Angeles County Fair Homebrew Competition are due at Eagle Rock Homebrew Supply no later than noon on Friday, July 24th.  One entry consists of two 12-oz bottles and the cost per entry is $9.  If you don’t have entries but would like to learn more about how beer is judged and how a competition is run, you might volunteer to steward for this competition, which will be judged at MacLeod Ale Brewing Company on August 1st.  In any case, for more information and to register your entries or as a steward, visit the Maltose Falcons page.

Entering competitions is not only a great way to get qualified feedback on your creations, but also a means to increase the visibility and credibility of your Yeastside Brewers homebrewing club.  Some of these comps count toward the Anchor Homebrewing Club of the Year, which is a great honor, not to mention the amazing party they throw at the brewery in San Francisco for the winners.

On the horizon remain the Pacific Brewers Cup and the California State Homebrew Competition.  Please visit their sites for more information.

Dear Yeastsiders,

This Saturday, January 4th, we will be having our first meeting of the year at Eagle Rock Home Brewing Supply from 2pm – 6pm.  This weekend looks to be beautiful, and there is no better way to celebrate the New Year than with some outstanding homebrew.  Please plan your transportation responsibly!

IPA’s will be the style of the month.  I have asked our new Competition Coordinator and previous president, Josh Jensen, to provide a tasting for everyone during the announcements.  Josh will lead us in a toast for the 3rd Anniversary of our Club!  We welcome your homebrews of this style, as well as any other style you have to share.  Moving forward, there will be a change in how we determine the style of the month.  Details to come.

  • Folding Chair
  • Any entries for the Doug King Competition (ERHBS is a drop off location)

Thanks to previous and future Board Members:

I just wanted to thank all the previous Board Members for their work in promoting and running our club.  Jerl Leutz accomplished a lot this past year as president, and really set the bar high for what we want to accomplish this year.  Danny Exum and Jeff Koehler have been Treasurer and Competition Coordinator for the past two years, respectively. We have increased member numbers, increased medal counts in competitions, and have certified  BJCP judges during the past year.  I thank them both for their hard work and dedication to the club.  Jeremy Stacy will continue his role as Administrative Coordinator.  Thank you Jeremy for helping us get organized!  I welcome Louie, Gayle, and Josh to the board this year, and I look forward to all that we will accomplish.  It is going to be a great year!

Competitions:

The Competition season is starting up and the first competition is the Doug King Memorial Competition 2014. Registration and entries must be submitted by January 10th.  For your convenience, you can bring your entries to the Meeting Saturday!  Please note that this competition uses the Maltose Falcons Style Guidelines, as opposed to the BJCP Guidelines.

We will update the Competition Schedule soon so check it regularly for updates.  Josh will also have some announcements at the meeting as well.  So far we have the following competitions to plan for, with many more to come.

December 7th Meeting – The Ochoa Residence

When: Saturday December 7th, 2PM – 6PM
Where: The Home of Dave and Sammy Ochoa5020 Glen Iris Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90041

Dear Yeastsiders:

This Saturday, December 7th, we’ll be holding our meeting at the home of VP Dave and Sammy Ochoa in Eagle Rock, from 2PM to 6PM. Street parking is available nearby. Please plan your transportation responsibly!

One of my favorites, Smoked and Wood-aged beers, will be the beer style of the month, which is appropriate especially for the holidays! We welcome your homebrews of this style, as well as any other style of homebrew to share and discuss. We’ll have some commercial samples on hand as well. Please bring a copy of your recipe to assist in obtaining helpful feedback.

Things to bring to Saturday’s meeting:

  • Tasting glass (YSB glasses are for sale, see below)
  • Homebrew
  • Recipes for discussion
  • Nominations for 2014 Officer Elections
  • Snacks, lunch, food
  • Folding chair

Officer Elections

I’ll start this off by thanking all of you for making this a truly memorable year for me as your president. We accomplished a lot with what we had, and I’m proud of that. We will continue to grow next year because there is still so much left to do, like build our serving station and achieve legitimacy in the eyes of “the man.” Let’s remember how much we’ve impressed our homebrew community with our presentation as skilled brewers and kind individuals at CHF. We’ve had so many new members join us this year, and that counts for a lot. Cheers to all of you and your help! Next year, Dave Ochoa will take over as president, and I have faith that he will bring us closer to the light.

We still seek new nominee officers for the 2014 calendar year. We still need a new VP, treasurer, administrative coordinator, and competition coordinator. One of our club’s core philosophies is to always bring in new members as officers so our club stays fresh and exciting.

I should emphasize that you do not need to be an overly experienced, award winning homebrewer to “qualify” as an officer. We just ask that you be dedicated to the group and willing to devote a few hours per month to club duties. We keep the club’s structure very streamlined so that it will still always be, above all things, a fun, stimulating and educational gathering.

We do not yet have any nominations for 2014 vice-president, and the other positions are still up for a vote, too. So, please check in with any of our officers to learn more about the positions should you have interest! Time is running short, and elections will be held at the December 7th meeting this Saturday.

Mead Demonstration

I will be demonstrating how to brew mead at the meeting on Saturday. I’ll be available to field your questions and engage in fervent discussion.

Competitions in and around December

Please, check the site regularly for deadlines.

October 5th Meeting – Gayle & Louie’s House aka AngryHorse Brewing Co.

When: Saturday October 5th, 2PM – 6PM
Where: Gayle & Louie’s House, aka AngryHorse Brewing Co., 3012 Via Breve, Montebello, CA 90640

Happy Harvest, fellow brewers:

We unexpectedly had to change our venue of the meeting this Saturday. Some of you may remember that we were supposed to hold the meeting at VP Dave Ochoa’s house in Eagle Rock. However, the Eagle Rock Music Festival is scheduled for this Saturday, too, which would have made for a traffic snarled, logistical nightmare with respect to parking and arrival. Gayle and Louie graciously offered to help us out with hosting again. December’s meeting will be held at Dave’s house.

So, without further ado, we’ll be holding our meeting this Saturday, October 5th, at Gayle and Louie Michel’s home in Montebello, from 2PM to 6PM. Street parking of plenty is available nearby. There is also a Gold Line station at Atlantic & Pomona, approximately 1.5 miles from their house, but using it will obviously require some logistics and planning. Whichever route you choose, please plan responsibly!

German Wheat and Rye Beers will be the beer style of the month. We’ll have some commercial samples on hand, and we welcome your homebrews of this style as well as any style of homebrew to share and discuss. Please bring a copy of your recipe to assist in obtaining helpful feedback. Your own commercial samples are welcomed as well.

Like last time, we’re going to have a potluck! Please, coordinate your contribution with Dave Ochoa, VP, so we can have a well-rounded spread.

Things to bring to Saturday’s meeting:

The website is fairly clear with how to enter the beer, but do not be afraid to contact our competition coordinator Jeff Koehler if you have questions! Good luck!

Group Buys, Hops & Yeast

Some members are organizing a group buy of bulk hops from Hop Union and a separate group buy of yeast from East Coast Yeast. Check their respective sites to review their inventory. Purchase will take place closer to fall. We can obtain virtually any hop, whether it be pellet or leaf, inclusive of US, European, Australian, or New Zealand varietals. Prices vary widely, but a rough ballpark is around $8-$15 per pound. Purchases must be in 1 pound increments, and will be delivered in sealed, oxygen impermeable bags flushed with nitrogen. Total orders for the shipment must be in 11 lb increments, so we’ll have to coordinate closely to fill and reserve space.  We also have access to CO2 extracted hop resin.  Info and prices will be provided to participants.
East Coast Yeast is more flexible, but please review their selection.
In either case, contact Jerl Leutz to reserve a slot in the bulk buys.
