June 1st Meeting – Gayle & Louie’s House aka AngryHorse Brewing Co.

When: Saturday June 1st, 2PM – 6PM
Where: Gayle & Louie’s House, aka AngryHorse Brewing Co., 3012 Via Breve, Montebello, CA 90640

To Our Faithful Members:

This Saturday, June 1st, we’ll be holding our meeting at Gayle and Louie Michel’s home in Montebello, from 2PM to 6PM. The weather is predicted to be hot and sunny, so I encourage you to dress appropriately and drink plenty of water. Street parking of plenty is available nearby. There is also a Gold Line station at Atlantic & Pomona, approximately 1.5 miles from their house, but using it will obviously require some logistics and planning. Whichever route you choose, please plan responsibly!

European Amber Lagers will be the beer style of the month. We’ll have some commercial samples on hand, and we welcome your homebrews of this style as well as any style of homebrew to share and discuss. Please bring a copy of your recipe to assist in obtaining helpful feedback. Your own commercial samples are welcomed as well.

Louie and Gayle will be firing up the grill for your culinary pleasure, and now is the time for you to shine and help us all out by contributing to the potluck! Please, coordinate your contribution with Dave Ochoa, VP, so we can hopefully avoid the unfortunate situation of having nine ambrosia salads and no tortillas.

They will also be doing a kegging demonstration!

Things to bring to Saturday’s meeting:

Upcoming Events

Yeastside Brewers will be collaborating with Long Beach Homebrewers to do a South Bay brewery tour. Please sign up with Dave Ochoa via email or at the meeting. More information will be coming available in the upcoming weeks. July 20, 2013 is the date scheduled for this event. We’ll be ride-sharing with the services of LA Beer Hop, who will also be making an appearance this Saturday.

Upcoming Competitions in and around May

Please, check the site regularly for deadlines. As we discussed last month, the AHA phased-out the COC program and instead instituted the Radegast Club of the Year program. Our participation is still TBD and open for discussion.

YSB Logo T-Shirts and Glasses For Sale

July’s Meeting will be held at Glendale Tap in . . . GLENDALE, on July 13. Take note that this is the SECOND weekend of July. Please utilize the first weekend of July to celebrate the fortune and glory of the USA.

May 11th Meeting – Eagle Rock Homebrew Shop

When: Saturday May 11th, 2PM – 6PM
Where: Eagle Rock Home Brewing Supply, 4981 Eagle Rock Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90041

Dearest Yeast Riders:

This Saturday, May 11th, we’ll be holding our meeting at Eagle Rock Home Brewing Supply, from 2PM to 6PM. It will likely be a sunny Spring day, so I encourage you to prepare for the sun with sunblock, plenty of water, and a sombrero. Parking is available behind the shop, accessible by alley. There is also street parking of plenty nearby.

Belgian and French Ales will be the beer style of the month. We’ll have some commercial samples on hand, and we welcome your homebrews of this style as well as any style of homebrew to share and discuss. Please bring a copy of your recipe to assist in obtaining helpful feedback. Your own commercial samples are welcomed as well.

Other things to consider bringing to Saturday’s meeting:

  • Tasting glass (YSB glasses are still for sale, see below)
  • Snacks
  • Anyone want to grill/BBQ? The weather should be perfect
  • Beer kegs, CO2 and connectors (our jockey box is online, self-aware, and fully operational)
  • Cobra-taps, as an alternative to the jockey box, with a keg on ice
  • An extra cobra-tap for your ill-prepared president’s keg of Belma ESB (please, and I thank you)
  • ICE and a chest/tub as appropriate

SCHF Was a Success!

The 2013 SCHF was last Saturday, May 4, 2013. Dozens of Yeastsiders attended, and we had over 20 beers and brews of various sorts on tap. We made a grand FIRST showing and a lasting impression on our fellow members of homebrew community. The jockey boxes and cask engine all performed perfectly. We should all feel proud and accomplished!

Cheers to those of you who pledged kegs and bottles of beer for the festival! I send a special thanks to Josh for spearheading the logistics of the trip!

Upcoming Competitions in and around May

Competition season is in full swing! Check the site regularly for deadlines. As far as this month’s Club Only Competition (“COC”), the May COC submissions were due at our last meeting (Extract Beers), and entries are now closed. Going forward, the AHA phased-out the COC program and instead instituted the Radegast Club of the Year program. No more COCs going forward.

YSB Logo T-Shirts and Glasses For Sale

April 6th Meeting, 2-6PM, Eagle Rock Brewery & SCHF Updates

April Meeting
When: Saturday April 6th, 2PM – 6PM
Where: 3056 Roswell St., Los Angeles, CA, 90065(323) 257-7866

To my Fellow Fermentators:

This Saturday we’ll be holding our meeting at Eagle Rock Brewery. Lot parking is available as well as street parking all along Roswell Street.

Around 2:30 P.M., there will be a tour of the brewery, and meeting announcements will take place at 3:00 P.M. We encourage you to bring snacks!  At about 6PM, the Schmuck Truck food truck will arrive if you want to buy some grub. In order to reduce trash and build our tribal solidarity, please remember to bring your tasting glass.

The style of the month is Bocks, but feel free to bring any type of homebrew. Consider bringing a copy of your recipe, as that greatly helps when discussing your beer and getting feedback.

As far as this month’s Club Only Competition (“COC”), the AHA put an end to the March/April COC on March 1. However, the May COC submissions are due this Saturday at our meeting (Extract Beers). It’s a broad category, so we anticipate many of you can submit to this one.

SCHF Updates & Sign-ups

Its a month away! The 2013 SCHF is Saturday, May 4, 2013. We have had many of you RSVP and we only have six spots left in the campsite, so sign up soon!

***Please remember to register as a CHA member, which is required to gain entry.*** Unless, of course, you are already volunteering, which is now filled.

Many of you responded to pledge kegs of beer for the festival. It was just what we needed! But, there will never be enough, so if you are considering it, please let Jerl Leutz or Josh Jensen know.

Bottles are accepted, too!

Your Pres. will also be unveiling a DIY portable cask beer engine at the fest.

We’re potlucking on the Friday of the festival, and we’re looking for people to contribute to that as well as sign up for shared equipment and tools. We have a few things, like barbeques and coffee, but we have some other needs. Again, please check with Jerl Leutz or Josh Jensen to make the appropriate arrangements.

Jockey Box Project

The hardware for our Jockey Box (portable serving station for kegs), arrived this week and will be assembled at the meeting. Maybe we’ll be able to get it cleaned, sanitized, and filled with homebrew, too. That, however remains to be determined, but cross your fingers!

Thanks again to Geoff and Dave for their donated hardware! It really brought the cost down and allowed us to install a second serving line.

Upcoming Competitions in and around April

Competition season is in full swing! Check the site regularly for deadlines.

  • Mayfaire, brought to you by the Maltose Falcons. Registration closes at midnight on April 18th. All entries are due at pickup sites by April 19th.
  • California State Fair, submission dates still TBD, but the Fair is in July.
  • May COC, Extract Beers, is due at our meeting on Saturday, this April 6.
  • The next 2013 COC is September/October, but the due date is still TBD. Plan to submit in August to be safe. Style is European Amber Lager.
  • If you know of other competitions not mentioned here or on our competition schedule, please advise us!

YSB Logo T-Shirts and Glasses For Sale

Yeastside Brewers logo glasses, while becoming scarce, are for sale, $8 each, $20 for three. Get ’em while they’re hot.

Yeastside Brewers logo t-shirts are for sale, too. They are American Apparel, sizes M through XXXL, white shirt with Yeastside-red logo. The shirts are part of a limited initial printing, so if you want one, be sure to get it at this meeting. We will undoubtedly run out. We will have more printed soon enough.

If you have design skills, you can help with the next round of shirts. Check in with Jerl or Jeremy.

Thanks for reading! Happy Brewing, and we’ll see you on Saturday!

March Meeting – Hermosillo Club in Highland Park

Saturday March 2nd, 3PM – 7PM @ Hermosillo Club
5125 York Blvd, Highland Park, 90042, (323) 739-6459

Salutations, Homebrewers!

This Saturday we’ll be holding our meeting at the Hermosillo Club in Highland Park. Plentiful parking is available in the side lot as well as on the street (metered). If worse comes to worst, there are two public lots nearby.

Since this is a pub destination, please refrain from bringing commercial beers, and please bring only one bottle of your homebrew. This is because we encourage you to patronize our kind hosts by purchasing commercial samples from the bar. As usual, please try to bring your tasting glass and a snack if you can.

Yeastside Brewers logo glasses, while becoming scarce, are for sale, $8 each, $20 for three. Get ’em while they’re hot.

The style of the month is Stouts. As far as this month’s Club Only Competition (“COC”), the AHA put an end to the March/April COC on March 1, the day before our meeting, thus preventing any participation in it by way of our Saturday meeting. Nevertheless, the May COC is still on the table (Extract Beers), and entries should be turned in at our April 6 meeting. Our knowledgeable officers and members will be available for consultation on COC strategy.

Aside from that, any style of homebrew you wish to bring is welcome. We are here to share and discuss them with you, our fellow brewers. It is advisable to bring a copy of your recipe, too, because the technical details are very helpful in discussing and developing feedback and pointers.

Road Trip with Strand Brewers, Pacific Gravity, Maltose Falcons, & Crude Brew Crew to Stone AHA Rally: March 16th

Previously, we’ve provided two updates on the AHA Rally at Stone Brewing in Escondido (ONE & TWO). There will be a private bus trip to Stone Brewing on March 16th for the March Madness AHA Rally. This is being organized by the Strand Brewers Club. Several Yeastsiders will be competing in the competition that day. Only members of the American Homebrewers Association (“AHA”) may attend, and RSVPs have closed due to capacity. The winner of this competition will be brewed and released nationally, as Stone’s Pro-Am entry in Denver at GABF.

Time permitting, the trip will also include Societe Brewing (substituted for Hess Brewing) and White Labs. There are now two pick up locations, one in Redondo Beach at the Green Line Station at 10AM and the other at 10:30AM(-ish) at the Willow Blue Line Station in northern Long Beach. The cost for the bus ride dropped to $30, thanks to favorable attendance levels. Tammy at Strand Brewers is handling the RSVPs and accepting the payment.
She’s set up both a new flyer with details and an RSVP portal. You may want to reconfirm to make sure you are on the list. She is also taking money now, and if you have not already received the mailing address for that payment, then please reconfirm with her and she’ll send you the address.

Tammy may be paying us a visit this Saturday if you have questions.

Upcoming Competitions in and around March

Competition season is in full swing! Check the site regularly for deadlines. If you learn of a good competition that is not on our list, please let us know by emailing competitioncoordinator@yeastsidebrewers.org!

The Southern California Homebrew Festival (SCHF)

The 2013 SCHF is Saturday, May 4, 2013. Here is a recap of last year’s 2012 festival. If you wish to attend, RSVP with Jerl Leutz or Josh Jensen at the next meeting. We’ll be pouring our own beers for the first time under a Yeastside Brewers banner! We already have a campsite reserved, so if you are going, I encourage you to register as a CHA member, which is required to gain entry.

Updates re Stone AHA Rally & 2013 SoCal Homebrew Festival!

Dear Yeastsiders,

We have a few updates for you with respect to the Stone AHA Rally and the 2013 Southern California Homebrew Festival .

The Stone March Madness 2013 Homebrew Competition & AHA Rally
************************************************
Saturday, March16, 2013, Escondido, CA

We are taking a day trip to this event at Stone Brewing in Escondido! Please refer to my prior blast for the nitty gritty event details. In a nutshell, we are sharing a bus ride with Strand Brewers and some other clubs. Several Yeastsiders successfully submitted homebrews for the competition, so let’s go support them! After the rally, we’ll go to Hess Brewing and White Labs for your respective educational pleasures.

Here’s your checklist to attend:
* Ensure you are an AHA member. You can also pay for this at the Stone Rally, but paying in advance at AHA would be ideal ($33, though there is a spouse membership fee of $19).
* RSVP to the Stone Rally on either the Stone website or at the AHA event page.
* RSVP with Tammy @ Strand Brewers (bus organizer) activities@strandbrewersclub.com.
* The cost of the bus ride has dropped to $30 per person payable to Tammy at Strand activities@strandbrewersclub.com. This is in addition to the AHA membership.
* Plan for a 12 hour trip, departing West Los Angeles around 10AM, arriving at Stone in Escondido at around 1PM. For more info and to RSVP email activities@strandbrewersclub.com. The tentative departure location is the Metro Green Line Station in Redondo Beach. This may change, so stay tuned.

We have room, so please come if you can. The fact that there is a bus will undoubtedly encourage more of you to come. It will make the trip safer and result in us having more fun socializing on the way down to Escondido!

The 2013 Southern California Homebrew Festival
*************************************************
Saturday, May 4, 2013, Lake Casitas, CA

We sent our valiant club representative Victor Macias on a mission to retrieve details regarding this event at the latest Club Reps Meeting on January 26th. In a nutshell, this event is probably the best representation of what we homebrewers stand for. We take over the Lake Casitas Recreation Area for a weekend, pouring homebrew, camping out, barbequeing, potlucking, and just generally enjoying ourselves. The locale is one of the more beautiful places in Southern California, and the facilities are pretty top notch. I know some of you may not be huge fans of camping, but this is camping-lite. It’s a clean place, your vehicle is next to your site, and there are plenty of facilities at your disposal. Even so, there are some reasonable hotels in the area, such as in Ojai. There’s a shuttle bus among other special amenities for us festival goers. Last year was your current president’s first year going, and it did not disappoint. Many of our members have been going for years.

Here are some important bullet points to consider while planning your attendance:
* Yeastside Brewers will be participating this year, displaying their proud banner, and pouring their humble, yet sophisticated homebrews (the reason behind the jockey box project!).
* The Bragging Rights-Only homebrew competition (BRO) for the 2013 Fest will be BJCP category 22, Wood-Aged beers. Each club gets one entry to be judged Friday on-site. Details to follow.
* The Friday night mini-Fest’s commercial breweries this year will be Firestone Walker, Stone, possibly Hollister Brewing, and one more to be decided.
* The CHA is encouraging clubs to pour on Friday night for the mini-Fest if we so choose. As was done last year, the Fest site will be cleared on Friday at 5PM so that all may be officially checked in (with photo I.D.) and receive their Fest wristband (don’t lose it!!!). Once that’s done, clubs can start pouring. You should carry your photo I.D. with you at all times while attending the Fest. Those not wearing an official wristband at any time cannot have beer poured for them–no exceptions.
* Servers reserve the right to refuse service to anyone deemed underage or who cannot produce photo I.D. or who is intoxicated.
* Speakers this year are Mitch Steele from Stone Brewing and possibly Gary Glass, Director of the AHA.
* You must be a CHA member to attend, and that membership is essentially your “ticket” to attend the Festival. Apply ASAP as they may cap membership at some point before the typical “Friday before the Fest” in order to assure a positive, un-crowded, and decidedly homebrewing-related atmosphere
* Purchasing your membership early will garner you a discounted rate which will decrease and finally expire as the Fest draws near. There will also be the possibility of earning your CHA membership by volunteering for a two-hour shift at the Fest, although these positions are often filled very quickly. Please visit calhomebrewers.org for more information.
* The CHA also reminds us that the very same laws that apply outside of the Lake Casitas Recreation Area apply inside as well. In addition to the Park Rangers, Ventura County Sheriff’s officers will be on-site all weekend. No riding in the back of pickup trucks, no drunk driving, no drunk biking (!), etc. It should go without saying, but please remember that you are representing your entire club (and all homebrewers) while attending, so please act accordingly.
* There will be bands, but I am not sure if they will be homebrew-related. That is still TBD.
* Yeastside Brewers has already reserved their campsite. Please RSVP by responding to this email or signing up with Josh Jensen at our next meeting. We will require a small deposit for the campsite rental.
* Finally, if you or anyone you know has contacts at a brewery, the CHA is always looking for beer-related swag for the massive Fest raffle. Please contact them if you can help.

Josh Jensen has taken up the lead on this festival. You can contact him or your president, Jerl Leutz, for more information about attending the Fest in the coming weeks. Please stay tuned.

Wishing you all the best, and I hope to see you at both events!

-Jerl Leutz, Yeastside President 2013

Golden Road Brewing Mystery Hops Pro/Am Competition

Golden Road has just contacted the Yeastside Brewers about a Pro/Am competition they are hosting for their entry to GABF 2013. They have set aside 10 slots for Yeastside Brewers that wish to enter. Unlike most competitions, the GABF style guidelines will be used. The fun twist on this competition is that you will be supplied mystery hops from Golden Road to brew your beer that fits any of the GABF style guidelines!

Since there will be plenty of interest in this, any member in good standing that wishes to enter needs to send an email to competitioncoordinator@yeastsidebrewers.org by Monday, February 4 at 9AM. If there are more than 10 people showing interest, a random drawing will be held to choose the 10 brewers that will represent our club for this competition.

The beers need to be ready at the end of March for this competition, so we will notify people on Monday to start brewing if they are selected!

For more information, please see the attached flyer.

Good Luck!
