Cider Pressing Trip & Group Buy of Hops & Yeast

When: Sunday, October 20th, 11:00 A.M. – 5:00 P.M.
Where: Snow-Line Orchard39400 Oak Glen Road Yucaipa, CA 92399

Dear Members:

We have two updates for you, a field trip and a group project!

Cider Pressing

We arranged with Snow-Line Orchard in Oak Glen (on the outskirts of Yucaipa in San Bernardino County) to do a bulk cider pressing. Snow-Line has their own apple orchard, consisting of numerous varieties of cider and table apples. They’re known to have the best cider in the Oak Glen area.

The way this will work is to bring your PLASTIC fermenters (glass is not allowed) to the cider mill on October 20, 2013 at 11:00 A.M and rendezvous with the rest of the Yeastsiders. The amount of cider you purchase is up to you. We are getting the wholesale price, which is anticipated to be about $9.50 per gallon (please be prepared to pay with cash). Remember, this is unpasteurized, preservative-free, fresh off the press, and they are heirloom apples. Take a look a their varieties. Many of the varieties grown in Oak Glen are antique varieties and are grown no where else in the world.

Here’s a quick tutorial on the cider making process.

The drive to Oak Glen from Los Angeles will take about an hour-and-a-half to two hours. If there is a traffic issue, it might take longer. It is about 90 miles away. You are responsible for your own transportation.

Snow-Line has a barbeque vendor on the premises during this time of year. There are also some other sources of food in the area such as Law’s (a local landmark), That Creative Cafe (fun place with great food), and some others. Alternatively, you can bring your own picnic. In any case, stay hydrated, as we’ll be at a decent altitude (4000′).

We will also be given a tour!

Once the cider pressing is over, please feel free to explore the area. Oak Glen welcomes thousands of local tourists every year. Some of the other orchards in the area offer U-Pick apples and other fun, family-oriented activities. Be sure to dress in layers since we’ll be at high altitude and it can go from hot to chilly as the day winds on.

Please RSVP to your president Jerl Leutz by this Sunday, September 1 to reserve your spot.

Group Buy of Hops & Yeast

We are organizing two group buy opportunities for our participating members.

First is a group buy of bulk hops from Hop Union. If you are a hop-fanatic, like many of us, you must use the best, freshest hops in your hop-forward brews, and you have to use a lot of them. This can get expensive, and it can get frustrating if you cannot find the varieties you need. A bulk purchase allows you to get high-quality, fresh hops at a fraction of the price if you are willing to buy by the pound and store them properly. Purchase will take place in September. Hops can be pellet or leaf, inclusive of US, European, Australian, or New Zealand varietals. Prices vary widely, but a rough ballpark is around $8-$15 per pound. Purchases must be in 1 pound increments, and will be delivered in sealed, oxygen impermeable bags flushed with nitrogen. Total orders for the shipment must be in 11 lb increments, so you must reserve space.  We also have access to CO2 extracted hop resin.  If you wish to participate, please reserve a slot with Jerl Leutz and indicate the varieties and amounts you wish to purchase, and please also indicate which items are most and least important to you. Space is limited and not all varieties are guaranteed to be available.

Second is a group buy of brewing yeast from the well-known East Coast Yeast (ECY) in New Jersey. This one will require coordination as well because ECY limits orders to 6 vials per shipment. Again, purchase will take place in September or as soon as product is available. Please review their selection and be aware that they are currently only propagating the strains ECY01, ECY02, ECY08, ECY09, ECY10, ECY21, and others still to be announced. Please limit your choice to one vial. If you provide some alternate choices, it would help us to accommodate. We may set up a waiting list if demand is too high. Please contact Jerl Leutz to reserve a slot and indicate your choices and alternates.

In either case, please reserve your slot by this Sunday, September 1.

Thanks for reading and cheers to obscure hops and yeast!

August 3rd Meeting – Angel City Brewery

When: Saturday August 3rd, 2PM – 6PM
Where: Angel City Brewery, 216 S. Alameda Street, Los Angeles, CA 90012

Dear Members:

This Saturday, August 3rd, we’ll be holding our meeting at Angel City Brewery near Downtown Los Angeles, from 2PM to 6PM. There is a private lot for parking at the brewery. There is also some limited street parking nearby (metered). They also have bike racks. Ideally, you can take public transportation with Union Station and the Gold Line stop at Little Tokyo/Arts District nearby. Please plan responsibly!

Light Hybrids will be the beer style of the month. Angel City will hopefully have some commercial samples on hand, so please do not bring your own commercial samples. We always welcome your homebrews of this style as well as any style of homebrew to share and discuss. Please bring a copy of your recipe to assist in obtaining helpful feedback.

Since Angel City has its own retail tasting room, please limit yourself to one or two bottles of homebrew (please use your best judgment). They appear to have about a dozen of their craft beers on tap, so let’s enjoy what they can provide us!

There are two food trucks scheduled to be at Angel City on Saturday: The Steel City Sandwich Truck and the Slapyo Mama Truck.

Things to bring to Saturday’s meeting:

  • Tasting glass (YSB glasses are still for sale, see below)
  • Homebrew
  • Snacks
  • Money to buy beers at the bar and food from the trucks
  • Righteous Vibes

Yeastside Brewers collaborated with Long Beach Homebrewers and went on a tour of LA’s South Bay breweries. We went to Strand, Ohana and Monkish Breweries. We had a great time and your VP Dave Ochoa did an amazing job organizing the event! Thanks and cheers to Dave, as well as Josh, Enrique and the rest from the Long Beach Homebrewers!

  • If you know of other competitions not mentioned here or on our competition schedule, please advise us!

Our Meeting Is on Mead Day!

Hear ye, hear ye! The AHA says that it is Mead Day on August 3rd! By the way, its IPA day tomorrow, Thursday, August 1. Apparently we should just rename it Fermentation Week. Either way, someone please bring an IPA and a mead on Saturday.

Group Buys, Hops & Yeast

Some members are organizing a group buy of bulk hops from Hop Union and a separate group buy of yeast from East Coast Yeast. Check their respective sites to review their inventory. Purchase will take place closer to fall. We can obtain virtually any hop, whether it be pellet or leaf, inclusive of US, European, Australian, or New Zealand varietals. Prices vary widely, but a rough ballpark is around $8-$15 per pound. Purchases must be in 1 pound increments, and will be delivered in sealed, oxygen impermeable bags flushed with nitrogen. Total orders for the shipment must be in 11 lb increments, so we’ll have to coordinate closely to fill and reserve space.  We also have access to CO2 extracted hop resin.  Info and prices will be provided to participants.
East Coast Yeast is more flexible, but please review their selection.
In either case, contact Jerl Leutz to reserve a slot in the bulk buys.

SCHF Was a Success!

The 2013 SCHF was last Saturday, May 4, 2013. Dozens of Yeastsiders attended, and we had over 20 beers and brews of various sorts on tap. We made a grand FIRST showing and a lasting impression on our fellow members of homebrew community. The jockey boxes and cask engine all performed perfectly. We should all feel proud and accomplished!

Cheers to those of you who pledged kegs and bottles of beer for the festival! I send a special thanks to Josh for spearheading the logistics of the trip!

Upcoming Competitions in and around May

Competition season is in full swing! Check the site regularly for deadlines. As far as this month’s Club Only Competition (“COC”), the May COC submissions were due at our last meeting (Extract Beers), and entries are now closed. Monster Brew Day with Ohana Brewing and Long Beach Homebrew Club

When: Saturday April 20th, 6:00 A.M. – 3:00 P.M. (EARLY AND ALL DAY)
Where: Ohana Brewing, 1756 E 23rd Street, Vernon, California, 90058

To all the Yeastsiders:

The Long Beach Homebrew Club is hosting a big brew day on Saturday April 20th at Ohana Brewery, and they would love to have some Yeastside Brewers at the event. They will be brewing a basic pale ale in hopes that people would experiment with the base beer and share it at SCHF.

Price: $25. The fee gives you access to 5 gallons of the wort. The price you’re paying is about the same or less than brewing a batch of beer at home. It’s a great deal.
Spots Available: There are 10 spots available as of today. There will be a waiting list for those who sign up late. Sign-up will be on a first come, first serve basis.
Where to Pay & Sign Up: Pay at Steinfillers4160 N Norse Way, Long Beach, CA 90808, (562) 425-0588. They will take down your information.
Schedule of Events: While it is not mandatory that you arrive at 6:00 A.M., we recommend that you should. You don’t necessarily need to be there for the entire brew session, BUT you need to be there at the END to pick up your wort. If you have never seen or brewed commercially, I suggest you attend from the beginning.
Parking: Street parking. I suggest you carpool and find a designated driver.
Food: Ohana will be providing breakfast. For lunch, the plan is to order two 6 foot long subs from subway and get sides from Costco. You are welcome to bring a side dish but do not have to.
Brewing Recipe: Again, they will be brewing a basic pale beer recipe which will allow you to experiment. Recipe will be 90% American Pilsner, 5% Honey Malt, 5% Wheat Malt with Magnum and Styrian Goldings hops.
Yeast: You can use the Ohana house yeast if you like. I believe the house yeast is an American strain.
Container for Taking Wort Home: NO GLASS.  Glass carboys are NOT allowed because they are too much of a safety concern if they break. Bring any container you like to take the wort home as long as it is not glass.
Comfort: BRING A CHAIR! It is a commercial brewery, not a brew pub.

Please RSVP with Steinfillers. If you have other questions, please, do not hesitate to ask me.

Cheers and Thanks for reading!

April 6th Meeting, 2-6PM, Eagle Rock Brewery & SCHF Updates

April Meeting
When: Saturday April 6th, 2PM – 6PM
Where: 3056 Roswell St., Los Angeles, CA, 90065(323) 257-7866

To my Fellow Fermentators:

This Saturday we’ll be holding our meeting at Eagle Rock Brewery. Lot parking is available as well as street parking all along Roswell Street.

Around 2:30 P.M., there will be a tour of the brewery, and meeting announcements will take place at 3:00 P.M. We encourage you to bring snacks!  At about 6PM, the Schmuck Truck food truck will arrive if you want to buy some grub. In order to reduce trash and build our tribal solidarity, please remember to bring your tasting glass.

The style of the month is Bocks, but feel free to bring any type of homebrew. Consider bringing a copy of your recipe, as that greatly helps when discussing your beer and getting feedback.

As far as this month’s Club Only Competition (“COC”), the AHA put an end to the March/April COC on March 1. However, the May COC submissions are due this Saturday at our meeting (Extract Beers). It’s a broad category, so we anticipate many of you can submit to this one.

SCHF Updates & Sign-ups

Its a month away! The 2013 SCHF is Saturday, May 4, 2013. We have had many of you RSVP and we only have six spots left in the campsite, so sign up soon!

***Please remember to register as a CHA member, which is required to gain entry.*** Unless, of course, you are already volunteering, which is now filled.

Many of you responded to pledge kegs of beer for the festival. It was just what we needed! But, there will never be enough, so if you are considering it, please let Jerl Leutz or Josh Jensen know.

Bottles are accepted, too!

Your Pres. will also be unveiling a DIY portable cask beer engine at the fest.

We’re potlucking on the Friday of the festival, and we’re looking for people to contribute to that as well as sign up for shared equipment and tools. We have a few things, like barbeques and coffee, but we have some other needs. Again, please check with Jerl Leutz or Josh Jensen to make the appropriate arrangements.

Jockey Box Project

The hardware for our Jockey Box (portable serving station for kegs), arrived this week and will be assembled at the meeting. Maybe we’ll be able to get it cleaned, sanitized, and filled with homebrew, too. That, however remains to be determined, but cross your fingers!

Thanks again to Geoff and Dave for their donated hardware! It really brought the cost down and allowed us to install a second serving line.

Upcoming Competitions in and around April

A Few Updates re SCHF and Recent Events

A Call-for-Kegs! – Southern California Homebrew Fest

When: Saturday May 4th
Where: Lake Casitas Recreation Area, 11311 Santa Ana Road, Ventura, CA

My dear homebrewers,

I appeal to your valiant pride and unrivaled generosity: we need beer for our booth at 2013 SCHF! Please, if you are so able, respond to this email to contribute homebrew to be poured at the fest. No amount is too great. We can pour from kegs and from bottles. Please tell me four things: (1) what you’re contributing, (2) how it will arrive at the fest (i.e., are you going?), (3) whether its in bottles or kegs, and (4) if its in kegs, whether it is a ball or pin lock keg.

Many of us are arriving on Friday, May 3 and leaving Sunday, May 5. The festival takes place, for the most part, on Saturday, May 4. Here is a recap of last year’s 2012 festival. If you will attend, RSVP with Jerl Leutz or Josh Jensen at the next meeting. We already have a campsite reserved. I also remind you to register as a CHA member, which is required to gain entry.

Other SCHF Items

  • We are potlucking Friday night before the festival (the night of May 3). Please sign up with Jerl Leutz or Josh Jensen at the next meeting.
  • Please brew a beer for the festival, and bring your special beers, wines, etc. for some truly epic bottle shares!
  • Prepare for the sun! Broad brimmed hats, sunscreen, and stay hydrated!
  • Carpool: parking is expensive!
  • There are all sorts of things we need for a comfortable stay. Let Jerl Leutz or Josh Jensen know if you can bring any of the following: canopies, lights, xmas lights, firewood, grills for BBQ, water, CO2 gas manifold, white board & markers, CO2 tanks (more is better!), and anything else you believe would be helpful. Again, let us know in advance so we can avoid duplicating efforts.

A Recap of the Stone AHA Rally: March 16th

Several Yeastsiders shared a bus with other homebrew clubs from the Los Angeles area, includind the Strand Brewers, Maltose Falcons, and Long Beach Homebrewers. As many of you know, five of our members were able to enter their homebrews in this exclusive competition. You may have also heard that, out of the thirty entrants, 2 Yeastsiders placed in the top three! Dave Ochoa, our VP, placed third, and the celebrated Ward Walkup placed second! Another member, Victor Macias, put down a journal entry for the day that I uploaded to the site for your leisurely review. We made a strong showing, and we are all proud.

The trip will also brought us to White Labs and Societe Brewing tasting rooms. It was both educational and fun!

April Meeting

The April meeting will be on Saturday, April 6th at Eagle Rock Brewery. Please stay tuned to your email inboxes for additional details next week!

March Meeting – Hermosillo Club in Highland Park

Saturday March 2nd, 3PM – 7PM @ Hermosillo Club
5125 York Blvd, Highland Park, 90042, (323) 739-6459

Salutations, Homebrewers!

This Saturday we’ll be holding our meeting at the Hermosillo Club in Highland Park. Plentiful parking is available in the side lot as well as on the street (metered). If worse comes to worst, there are two public lots nearby.

Since this is a pub destination, please refrain from bringing commercial beers, and please bring only one bottle of your homebrew. This is because we encourage you to patronize our kind hosts by purchasing commercial samples from the bar. As usual, please try to bring your tasting glass and a snack if you can.

Yeastside Brewers logo glasses, while becoming scarce, are for sale, $8 each, $20 for three. Get ’em while they’re hot.

The style of the month is Stouts. As far as this month’s Club Only Competition (“COC”), the AHA put an end to the March/April COC on March 1, the day before our meeting, thus preventing any participation in it by way of our Saturday meeting. Nevertheless, the May COC is still on the table (Extract Beers), and entries should be turned in at our April 6 meeting. Our knowledgeable officers and members will be available for consultation on COC strategy.

Aside from that, any style of homebrew you wish to bring is welcome. We are here to share and discuss them with you, our fellow brewers. It is advisable to bring a copy of your recipe, too, because the technical details are very helpful in discussing and developing feedback and pointers.

Road Trip with Strand Brewers, Pacific Gravity, Maltose Falcons, & Crude Brew Crew to Stone AHA Rally: March 16th

Previously, we’ve provided two updates on the AHA Rally at Stone Brewing in Escondido (ONE & TWO). There will be a private bus trip to Stone Brewing on March 16th for the March Madness AHA Rally. This is being organized by the Strand Brewers Club. Several Yeastsiders will be competing in the competition that day. Only members of the American Homebrewers Association (“AHA”) may attend, and RSVPs have closed due to capacity. The winner of this competition will be brewed and released nationally, as Stone’s Pro-Am entry in Denver at GABF.

Time permitting, the trip will also include Societe Brewing (substituted for Hess Brewing) and White Labs. There are now two pick up locations, one in Redondo Beach at the Green Line Station at 10AM and the other at 10:30AM(-ish) at the Willow Blue Line Station in northern Long Beach. The cost for the bus ride dropped to $30, thanks to favorable attendance levels. Tammy at Strand Brewers is handling the RSVPs and accepting the payment.
She’s set up both a new flyer with details and an RSVP portal. You may want to reconfirm to make sure you are on the list. She is also taking money now, and if you have not already received the mailing address for that payment, then please reconfirm with her and she’ll send you the address.

Tammy may be paying us a visit this Saturday if you have questions.

Upcoming Competitions in and around March

Competition season is in full swing! Check the site regularly for deadlines. If you learn of a good competition that is not on our list, please let us know by emailing competitioncoordinator@yeastsidebrewers.org!
* Mazer Cup entries are due March 1. That means Mead (honey wine).
* AHA Homebrew Competition. Registration is open (Feb. 26), and entries are due between Mar. 18-27.
* Mayfaire, brought to you by the Maltose Falcons. April 19th, registration closes!
* Golden Road’s Pro-Am. Entries due between March 22-31.
The Southern California Homebrew Festival (SCHF)

The 2013 SCHF is Saturday, May 4, 2013. Here is a recap of last year’s 2012 festival. If you wish to attend, RSVP with Jerl Leutz or Josh Jensen at the next meeting. We’ll be pouring our own beers for the first time under a Yeastside Brewers banner! We already have a campsite reserved, so if you are going, I encourage you to register as a CHA member, which is required to gain entry.
